Yea interesting and novel, but they would surely require a constant supply of wind and instantaneous wind gusts could be a problem for power stability. Still an interesting idea.

Ships always used to sail by wind so it must be possible. Dare say it'd be a bit slower than usual though.

Some of the clipper ships were actually faster than some of todays tankers and cargo ships.Most of the my ships could barely do 13-14 knots whereas most clippers could hit 18 -20 knots

There are a few videos on youtube showing the actual ship operating the sail:


Some time ago I also saw a video from the company that designs the system (similar to the one posted by karmakop, but with a little bit more technical details). in that video they were using a four rope system with an integrated control to properly steer the sail in presence of unsteady wind. The system tried to mimic what a kyte surfer does with his own kite.

For the first time, the US Navy is using a new breed of sailing ship to deliver military equipment, a move that can potentially reduce fuel costs by 20 to 30 percent, or roughly $1,600 a day per ship, according to the ship's owners.
