Default Plant vault passes billion mark

Britain's "Noah's Ark" for plants has just collected its billionth seed.

The Millennium Seed Bank will present the seed, from an African bamboo, to Chancellor Gordon Brown, as it seeks funds to continue operating after 2010.

Finding endangered species of plants and preserving is important, no question. If a habitat gets destroyed in the future, it could be our only hope of keeping these plants around.

Is the US doing anything like this?

I think most universities worldwide and likely some private organisations have had plant and wildlife "banks" for some time. Don't know what the current status is, though.

Norway just built one in the far north. But that was more like a vault, a real secure place to hold seeds in case something happens.

Now I just wonder what buried surprises our past civilizations have left for us. With our luck it will probably be a vault full of killer robots.

Engineers have begun cooling the "doomsday vault", which aims to protect the world's crop varieties from disaster.
