I recently watched an old video that was shown on the bbc about 10 years ago. it was about hunting in africa and the progression of the laws (as it was in a lecture on wildlife and environmental law).
the video showed westerners going to africa and killing thousands of big mammals. when the population declined the brittish went and past judgment and said that it was the african 'savages' that had caused the decline in numbers. therefore they banned all africans from hunting in their own country when they had only killed what was needed to survive. the westerners were still allowed to go in and kill as much as they wanted because 'it wasn't their fault'. there was even a scene where some americans had taken an elephant back to america and thought it was a good study to see how much electricity would kill an elephant

. i couldn't believe it. i'm not a person who cries at any available moment, but seeing the society that i'd been brought up in was harsh.
finally hunting was banned all together but now there are areas where it is legal to hunt, but it costs quite an extortionate amount, therefore there aren't as many people going to do it.
some examples of the game fees are:
elephant $4000
olive baboon $90!
impala $240
wildebeest $320
buffalo $600
DON'T BE ALARMED! there are also additional fees too and someone can't just fly in and kill an animal and fly out again they have to stay there for at least a week. this would make the cost to kill an elephant around $25,000.
