Default Spain to Grant Rights to Apes

The Great Beyond - June 27, 2008

The Spanish parliament is to back legal rights for great apes, that’s gorillas, chimpanzees and orangs. The parliament’s environmental committee has thrown its weight behind the Great Ape Project, which aims to provide apes with a “the right to life, the freedom from arbitrary deprivation of liberty, and protection from torture”. As the resolution passed by the committee on Wednesday has cross-party support it is expected to become law, says Reuters, and experiments on great apes will be outlawed. Although there are not thought to be any such experiments taking place there is no law stopping them in Spain. Legislation will also outlaw their use in shows and circuses and the animals may only be kept in conservation centres. However the government has denied this amounts to ‘human rights for apes’ (El Pais)...

This is a political move by the Spanish.Obviously many of you have never heard of the Barbary Apes which live in Gibraltar which is a British outpost at the tip of Europe. The legend is that when the apes leave, then so will the British, a prospect which the residents of Jib do not relish. So just what are the Spaniards up to with this stroke?

This legislation is a sign of the downward spiral of Spain. The unborn child can be murdered, but apes can't be in circuses?!

In a generation Spain will be substantially weaker and poorer than it is now. Spain is committing a slow form of suicide.

Lets hope that Spain takes the turn to the political right that Italy, Germany, Canada, the UK, et al are going through right now.

Spain’s recent vote to give limited human rights to Great Apes is a great start at breaking down the species barriers, under which humans are regarded as godlike and the rest of the animal kingdom are treated like dirt. But some are aghast. Catholic bishops attacked the vote as undermining a divine will that placed humans above animals.
