Default Chrissakes, don't shoot the elephants!!

The renewed civil war between Sri Lanka's government and the separatist Tamil Tigers is claiming many victims, among them increasing numbers of the island's wild elephants.

Of the 74 elephants which died in the north and north-west region last year, 44 were killed by gunfire.

The others fell victim to poison, were deliberately electrocuted by farmers who connected wire fences to the mains, or fell down wells.

The figures are only the recent ones. Elephant killings in srilanka have been since quite some time.

Elephant News Sri Lanka

"Opening up of the forest reserves for development projects including Pelwatta Sugar factory resulted in the threat of wild elephants. About ten villagers were killed by the wild elephants and caused extensive damage to houses. There isn’t a single house that was not damaged by wild elephants. Several houses were razed to the ground. Wild elephants that enter the human habitats at dusk in search of fodder pull down the houses to eat paddy and destroy the crops in the home gardens." One thing to kill animals because they threaten villages and so on, but quite another to shoot them just because they get in the way of stupid wars and squabbles.
