I love hearing about countries actually doing something constructive towards increasing their use of renewable energy.

Default Portugal / Pelamis

The Pelamis machines have been ready for deployment for some time now I am not sure why they are not in the water. It will be a real boost to the whole marine renewables area when they finally start producing energy.

Also, Portugal is not just licensing Pelamis - they have decreed a 'Pilot Zone' with a simplified planning system that should ensure many more WECs are deployed off their coast. They are cliaming that they will put all the general consents in place and even provide an electrical connection to he grid - this hasn't happened yet but it would be amazing if it did.

You may also know that the Wave Hub (www.wavehub.co.uk) got its consents last week. This is good news as well but not as flexible as the Portugese zone, they have pre-specified the technologies that can first use the 4 hubs, and it is still unclear how many further consents these dives would need and how future devices will be able to deploy there.

Still, interesting times for us Wave power watchers

Planet Ark : Portugal Opens Pioneer Commercial Wave Power Plant

Earlier this week, Portugal debuted the world’s first commercial wave energy farm. Wave energy at the Agucadoura station is converted into electricity with the use of three red “sea-snakes”, or cylindrical wave energy converters, that are attached to the seabed off Portugal’s northern coast. Energy captured by the sea-snakes is carried to an undersea cable station, where it is then fed into the electrical grid.

The devices will generate 2.25 MW of electricity— enough to power 1,500 homes. Ultimately, the wave power station will expand to produce up to 21 MW of power.

Unfortunately, wave power is not price competitive in Portugal at the moment. The €9m project was only made possible by the country’s feed-in tariff, which requires utilities to buy renewable energy from a wide range of producers. However, proponents of the farm believe that wave energy could be cost-efficient within 15 years.

Agucadoura’s farm is a only a small part of Portugal’s renewable energy plans, which include both the world’s largest wind farm and the world’s largest solar farm. The country hopes to generate 60 percent of its total energy from renewables by 2020.

We must all - sooner, rather than later - come to terms with the fact that energy from oil, gas, and coal is not cheap, but extremely costly; as seen from an ecological point of view. Such a realization would swiftly make all renewable energy sources cost-efficient, and it would happen overnight. I mean: it takes a little respect for scientific findings, that's all. And of course the political will to act on that science. And I mean, wisdom has nothing to do with it: it's got all to do with a measure of reasonability, a willingness to learn, and a firm belief in looking for options (solar power, wind power, wave power, etc.). As for now, though, our political and industrial powers are much more concerned about the inconvenient truth that most all modern societies depend on fossil-fuels, and that it is going to take a lot of work (we hate work, don't we?) to do away with this oh, so unfortunate threat. Our politicians, industrial leaders, economists, and (for goodness sake!) ordinary pedestrians are too full of fear, and that is the reason why scientific truths just do not stick. Fear of change, that's the term. Fear of change, and the silent scream: "Oh My God! What Have We Done?!" - Leaving us all with even more fear of change. Idiot mammals.

I always love seeing new kinds of alternate energy introduced. The key is to diversify, and I think we're starting to get there.

Quick summary of this project:

* Initial costs are put at 8.5 million euro.
* Once complete the project is expected to meet the average annual electricity demand of more
than 15,000 Portuguese households whilst displacing more than 60,000 tonnes per year of
carbon dioxide emissions from conventional generating plant.
* About the company Welcome - PelamisWave
* Depending on the wave resource, machines will on average produce 25-40% of the full rated output over the course of a year.
