Water butts collect rain water from places such as your roof or bath. It's a great way of collecting water for you garden.

This sells a wide range of water butts, to suit most needs:
http://www.thewaterbuttshop.co.uk/index.html

You'll need a rainwater diverter:
http://www.greenfingers.com/supersto...&pf_id=DD3607D

This fits to your down pipe from your gutter. It is designed to fit to the side of a water butt, and if fitted at the same height on the down pipe as the water butt, will stop collecting when the wtaer butt is full.

If the down pipe also collects bath and sink water, you may want to collect from above that point to avoid shampoo and soaps getting in the water butt. This will mean that an overflow system will be a good idea, which is a good opportunity to start a senond or third water butt, so you can increase your capacity if you are a heavy user.

Of course you can do it very cheaply, by finding an old container, such as a 205L plastic drum, or IBC which holds 1m3 of water, which many industries use to buy in liquids, and need to dispose of.

If you need a longer hose from your rainwater diverter, they are 1" ribbed pipes, which are available from aquarium shops by the metre. The taps that a water butt come with can also be bought from shops that sell home brew kits.

If you want to collect bath water seperately, the pipe from the waste water drain should fit this device:

Bath water diverter:
http://www.naturalcollection.com/nat...asp?P36=5CXP3V

It works much like a rain water diverter, except it fits to the darin pipe from the bath, and uses a hosepipe.

Currently, B&Q are selling tall water butts that are styled as marble pillers, but are actually large plastic containers. Just the thing for those concerned about appearance.

This is what an IBC looks like:

Also, for those interested in the watershed perspectives of water issues, a great starting place for general information is the US EPA's Watershed Academny webpage.

Default Water SISWEB

WaterSISWEB.org is a social bookmarking website developed by UC Davis PhD students. This website works similar to Digg and del.icio.us with the difference that WaterSISWEB is dedicated to Water Resources only.

Everyone can register in this website to start posting links and share his/her bookmarks with other members of the community. Users also can vote for and comment on other posted links.

The interesting fact about social bookmarking websites like this is that they are run by users, just like this forum. One big difference with Watersisweb and this forum is that users vote determine the location of the post in the page. When users post a new link it first appears in the Upcoming section of the website and after it gets enough votes it becomes popular and moves to the Top page.

WaterSISWEB has different categories including Fluid Mechanics, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Water Quality, and Miscellaneous.

Different types of links are posted on WaterSISWEB: News, Article, Paper, Video, Image, Other

Links can be sorted by the region they belong to. The available regions are USA and all USA states (e.g. California), Canada and all Canadian provinces (e.g. British Columbia), Europe and European Countries (e.g. U.K.), Asia and Asian Countries (e.g. China), Africa and African countries (e.g. Ethiopia), Oceania and its countries (e.g. Australia), Americas and American countries (e.g. Brazil), and Antarctica.

Some blatent self-promotion here but here's a link to my PhD thesis on Rainwater Harvesting:

PhD Thesis: A Whole Life Costing Approach for Rainwater Harvesting Systems

For anyone with a general interest in the subject area, chapter two might be useful (literature review on rainwater harvesting systems).

I'm sure that the masses are lined up around the block frantically awaiting to buy these cockamamie contraptions.

Responsible, national, water governance, free from meddling, corporate oligarchies, is what we really need.

The water policies of many national governments include water conservation measures such as these (e.g. Germany and Australia are two countries heavily pushing for savings in the domestic sector).
