If this thing uses garbage to produce energy what happens to all of the mass from the garbage? Does it turn to ash? If so I wonder how environmentally friendly the ash is compared to the garbage.

Well at this stage, its probably not very economic, so applications such as the military get mentioned.

These things get developed for the military because the military and the government are the only ones with the cash to pay for this kind of development. The only ones willing to take gambles on wacko projects that "might" work, someday. Ya, its a great idea, but if you came to me as an inventor looking for $$ for a new invention with a statement like "ya, we have this idea for a big portable device that you can feed garbage and get electricity out the other end" I would be hesitant at best on giving you development bucks. Sure, someone might pony up the cash, but it might take you longer to get funding than it does to develop.

As its a US development I can't imagine it does much for the global C02 levels, I doubt it has the controls on the emissions you would find in a european incinerator. Especially after several hours burning diesel.

Is the 90% increase in energy take account of the several hours of burning diesel.

I suppose it is great for the Military to take care of their canteen waste, but not for the Environment.

Generating energy from daily waste is not new. It is form of recycling waste to produce combustible gasses and solids which are used as fuel for generating power.

Different type of wastes are seperated. Bio-degradable waste is the mostly used waste in such kind of power plants. Non bio-degradable wastes like plastics and metals are properly segregated suing sofisticated machines and seperately recycled.

This reduces the burden on the city for disposing its daily waste whcih is generated in tonnes and not kilos.

Currently the amount of power genration from this souce is negligibel but it can emerge a good and clean source of alternative enrgy.

Using garbage to generate power is being practiced in many a cities the world over, not becuase there is a requirement of alternative source of power, but for the simple reason that the garbage needs disposal every day, and if in the process the plant becomes energy self sufficient if it can use the garbage in a meaningful manner.

Using garbage for electricity production is a very good idea. Not only is solves the problems of garbage disposal but also in the process generates some surplus elctricity and some maunre for the farmers. It si Win-Win situation.

Garbage disposal is a major challane faced by any city. A systematic disposal on a regular basis is required. Earlier dumps were used for garbage disposal, but with the advent of new technology which can produce electricity from garbage, City plannners have got the double edged sword to fight garbage menance.

Yes this a practical solutions but then the citizens must learn to segregate garbage into re-cycalbe and non-recyclable garbage and collection of garbage must has to be made very systematically.
