Solar Energy Forum I have no doubt that we will be successful in harnessing the sun's energy.... If sunbeams were weapons of war, we would have had solar energy centuries ago. ~Sir George Porter

Default Solar panels under $1 per watt

A cheaper way to make solar panels has been developed in Colorado.

Yes it's great to see the new lower cost Thin Film Solar technology finally becoming reality.

"The panels will be made by AVA Solar, and production should start towards the end of next year at a huge factory employing 500 people."

It's nice to have these stories but they all seem to be in the future. Where are the changes available now?

There are solutions out there now that don't require huge loans or cash. The public knows that there is a problem, it is up to us to let them in on our knowledge.

.
Less than 2% of production materials needing recycling,
Projected cost to consumers of about $2/watt.
High efficiency conversion rate of 11-13% efficiency.

~Cool~

Just wish the process didn't require cadmium.

So does this mean we can buy them for $1 per watt or are they going to add a markup for profit.

I'd like to have a 12,000 watt system on my future residence and paying $12,000 for 12,000 watts is damn good, but I doubt it'll happen anytime soon.

In 2002/2003 I had a conversation with a tutor at Edinburgh University about the exciting, new, experimental offshore wind turbine they were involved in. One of the blades had fallen off, they were improving the design etc. etc. Four years later they are taken for granted. Stories about what is about to happen tend to grab more headlines.

I was just reading about a photovoltaic financing scheme that had been set up in South Africa and Zimbabwe a few years ago.

Yes, I suppose that's true. Do you have a link for that scheme you mentioned here?
