| Solar Energy Forum I have no doubt that we will be successful in harnessing the sun's energy.... If sunbeams were weapons of war, we would have had solar energy centuries ago. ~Sir George Porter |

The World's First Solar Cell Phone
We've seen the prototypes and heard the speculation for years now, but here we have it, the world's first solar cell phone, and you can buy one right now...if you happen to live in China.

"The panels trickle-charge the battery in any amount of light, including indoors (or even by candlelight), and the battery life is 2.5 times longer than it would without the panels. An hour of direct sunlight will give users 40 extra minutes of talk time."
It's not just solar powered.

I have a device that I can plug my cell phone into and crank to charge it up if I'm stuck away from a power outlet.

Cellphones another shackle locked onto consumer
First Yes in an emergency a cellphone can be life saving,
But after that all cellphones do is make you waste your time and money.
by the way cellphone owners? Have you ever been at a place where you cellphone does not work?
If so them tell me the difference between a signal lost cellphone and you are a few miles away from a phone booth?
Remember Telephone booths for the public? You don't?
Anyone remember home land line telephones? They worked you had answering machines to get messages. Your only problem was when there was storm damage to the lines, It usually only took a couple of hours to repair.
Yep I still get my computer Internet over my phone line,
Years ago thy claimed movies could be sent over the phone line,
Oh taking pictures and video with my home phone? Why not ? I might not be able to leave my own yard to take those pictures ,but I am sure It could be done,
So again why does everyone need all those cellphones?
By the way you average home telephone lasts decades . where your average cellphone what a year?
And those thrown away cellphones are not good for our environment,
Ah but you would miss talking everywhere about absolutely nothing important wouldn't you?
Then why not visit people and talk face to face? I'll bet you will have less to say.
Nope No Cellphones here!
By the way has anyone seen the estimates of all the wild birds killed running into those so many cellphone towers. Very shocking and such a waste just to talk too cousin Sue or Taking a picture of a complete stranger because he is funny looking , Or texting you girlfriend next store to say HOW ABOUT TONIGHT.

Genaman, I'm not too sure why I'm bothering to write this. I'm fairly sure you won't take this in or consider changing your views. But anyway...
Cell phones can be a godsend in some circumstances. When I was living in rented accomodation and moving every six months, I rarely bothered connecting a landline. I was far away from my family and boyfriend, and a mobile was the only way to keep in touch between visits. That's just one example from my own experience, there must be lots more.
Like almost anything, mobile phones can be a force for good or for bad, and probably aren't essential for life, but then lots of other things aren't either but can enhance and enrich our lives. The fact that they don't enrich yours and you don't feel you need one doesn't mean that others can't use them in creative ways to enrich their lives - in which case, it is not true that all they do is make you waste your money (although I agree that that can be the case).

Why should anyone need to have a landline and pay rental for something that you don't use? My cell phone unties me from being stuck in one spot,my son can call for his parental taxi when needed,my wife can call for help if she should be running late for meetings or meals and it is my safety net in case I fall off a bloody cliff while out researching or taking photies. And I once got instant help for a family who had been in a car crash and another time could warn to the police of a road blocked by a sudden freeze and and and

I think this is stupid. For the price, why not buy a 240W panel and put it on your roof. You could charge 100 phones from that, for the same price.
I guess the only benefit is it can charge on the go, but all that is done is making the manufacturer gobs of money.

So, you're argument is that people don't need cell phones because you don't need them yourself? Yeah, right...
