Solar Energy Forum I have no doubt that we will be successful in harnessing the sun's energy.... If sunbeams were weapons of war, we would have had solar energy centuries ago. ~Sir George Porter

I wonder if this guy may have even bought £9000 worth of solar cells to provide electricity to heat his home and provide hot water. Perhaps not.

It's difficult to be certain what he actually did. The initial post just says he spent £9000 on solar panels. It does not really get into the detail of what type of panels he bought.

Also it talks about him not being able to have a hot bath or shower in the morning after installation. Now is that for just the morning of installation of did they mean every morning ? That aspect is a bit confusing.

Fancy plumbing and a new boiler would certainly add to the cost. Perhaps he added some sort of home heating system along with hot water system ?

I think we need more information to evaluate the situation further.
I don't know all the details. I believe it was main solar thermal panels for heating water, as my boss said that part of the cost was all the extra plumbing. It's very difficult to believe that could come to 9 grand though. Since he had oil heating before, perhaps that would explain why he needed so much plumbing done. I think the lack of hot water in the morning, or at least having to supplement his solar heating in the morning is an on-going thing because obviously, the sun doesn't shine at night.

I have a friend who is going to try build his own solar thermal water heating system. Since he is extremely tight with money, he is going to try do it as cheap as possible. I'll be interested to see how he gets on. The thing that most puts me off with DIY schemes is the plumbing. I doubt my plumbing skill would be up to it.

Before you spend 20 grand on solar panels you should make your home as energy efficient as possible. That way you might only have to spend 15 grand on panels . There are some really easy and cheap ways to minimize your energy consumptions...

1. Set your thermostat to a higher temperature in the summer
2. Check and change air filters regularly
3. Replace high-use lights with compact fluorescent lamps
4. Look for sources of air leakage in your house
5. Check insulation levels and possibly add additional insulation in attics and crawlspaces
6. Check ducts
7. Consider alternatives to help keep your home cool
8. When buying or replacing appliances, choose energy efficient models
9. Weatherize your windows and consider replacing single-pane windows
10. Use less hot water
11. Practice conservation habits to save energy

Remember the lower your electricity bills are right now, the less amount of solar panels you will need to buy later, so the more money you will save in the long run!

Default Heat my Home Solar Panels

Simply put, 'direct' solar tubes are the most efficient solar technology available. This is based on a 2001 study of all solar technologies by the Department of Trade and Industry. (Now Dept of Business).

Since then solar tubes have evolved further, and now we are proud to showcase the latest in ‘direct’ heat solar tubes, which have improved solar efficiency even further, using only the highest quality components available in the solar industry. This gives the advantage of better performance and peace of mind but with no heat exchange required, this can free up your twin coil (when applicable) for other applications such as under floor heating/bio mass stoves etc.

1. If you have a traditional ‘gravity feed’ system, with a southerly facing roof space, then you home is ideal.
2. If you have a ‘vented’ thermal store with twin/solar coil, then your home is suitable too.
3. If you have a Combi Boiler, then you will need to replace this at the end of it’s life for a condensing boiler with ‘vented’ tank.
4. If you have a ‘high pressure’ system with gauges, then you will need to replace this with a ‘vented’ tank.
