| Solar Energy Forum I have no doubt that we will be successful in harnessing the sun's energy.... If sunbeams were weapons of war, we would have had solar energy centuries ago. ~Sir George Porter |

"E-Gang
The Sunshine Economy
Solar power is the ultimate alchemy, using what's free to create something valuable. Over the next 25 years solar is expected to be the fastest-growing alternative source of electric energy. But it is complex, expensive magic and has burned many entrepreneurs and investors in the past. With clean power in great demand, and fresh capital coming in from governments and capital markets, the solar economy is again humming with new materials, ideas, designs and business plans. Solar now meets only a 0.1% sliver of our electricity needs, but opportunities for growth and invention, as this year's E-gang members show, are bright. "

A deeper look into the Silicon cell
A deeper look into the Silicon cell
Silicon has some special chemical properties in its crystalline form. An atom of silicon has 14 electrons, arranged in 3 different shells. The first 2 shells, those closest to the centre, are completely full. The outer shell, however, is only half full, having only 4 electrons.

This isn't a link to a solar company but I found it to be an interesting article that I wanted to share. Apparantly, the Idaho National Laboratory is working on developing solar cells that are up to 80% efficient and can even generate energy (albeit less of course) at night. The original article can be found here:

Anyone heard of this before or can speculate on how soon we'll see this technology on the commercial market? Just think how much more energy can be harvested on a smaller surface area. If they can mass produce this technology and integrate it in products such as electric cars, it would be amazing.
