Solar Energy Forum I have no doubt that we will be successful in harnessing the sun's energy.... If sunbeams were weapons of war, we would have had solar energy centuries ago. ~Sir George Porter

Thumbs up MIT: Solar power storage discovery could mean energy nirvana

Researchers at MIT say they've made an energy storage breakthrough that could transform solar power from an alternative to a mainstream energy source. The university is calling the solar project a major advancement in energy research.

The necessary technology seems to be in place. What remains is political and industrial will, I suppose. The real implementation of solar technology is what I'm thinking about now. I want to see solar power plants built, not only proposed by universities and half serious energy companies looking for money to finance their projects. We've got to start building all these solar power plants and wind farms, and not just keep discussing these things as possible future advancements. The technology is there. What remains to be seen is the will to look beyond the reality of this fossil-fuelled industry and economy of ours. The will to think in new and refreshing ways, much rather than clinging to old value systems that really can have no future in the long term; not if we're going to appear, in the historical sense, as this serious generation of ecosystems protectors behaving in a more sensible, more sustainable way that what used to be the case in the 20th century. And I think that's what we all want future social scientists to judge us as: the generation which decided to rely more on renewable energy systems, as opposed to the fossil-fuels solutions brought to us by forefathers who did not even think about the ecological consequences of their actions, but clung foolishly and stubbornly with the systems of thinking that was put in place a couple of hundred years ago. And yet again: implementation is a requirement here. We can't allow ourselves to wait, wait, think about it, wait, wait and see, think again, and see, see, see. We must do.

I believe this "break-through" is simply electrolysis of water to hydrogen. This really shouldn't have taken MIT students to come up with this. I posted this idea a year ago when I joined the forum. I wonder if one of those punks stole my idea
