Solar Energy Forum I have no doubt that we will be successful in harnessing the sun's energy.... If sunbeams were weapons of war, we would have had solar energy centuries ago. ~Sir George Porter

Default How a Giant Solar Tower Could Power the Future

A new energy concept called a solar tower could generate enough electricity for 200,000 homes. Looking like a giant smokestack, it would release no noxious fumes — just sun-heated air. Demonstrated more than 20 years ago, the basic design calls for solar collectors to warm the air near Earth's surface and then channel it up the tall central tower.

This could be great. Just imagine, solar panels to generate some energy and heat the air which is then used to move a wind turbine which agains creates some more energy. This could increase effeciency of current solar systems.

What say?

This Solar Tower concept has been around for quite a few years, but hasn't taken off. I do wonder if other competing solar energy technologies may have shown better overall performance.

Good to try things out though. Survival of the fittest and all that. The one solar tech that eventually wins will probably kick arse.

Oh I agree completely. It will be interesting to see it if ever does take off. Further to this, if they can marry the technology with say a greenhouse concept, it might prove commercially more attractive.
