Default Solar Energy to Change the Face of India

The Prime Minister of India released a National Action Plan on Climate Change today that focuses attention on eight priorities, the first among which is “Solar Energy”, whose success-- according to the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh--has the potential to change the face of the country, and perhaps the world.

I am glad that India is moving in the right decision. But somehow I don't understand why they are moving in both direction i.e. Solar as well as Nuclear?

Current government is willing to sign Nuclear Deal with US which would ban usage of any nuclear weapons by india hence security would be compromised. Moreover India is already having some fuel which is estimated to last around 40 years for its 17 large and small nuclear power plants.

Be awesome if India could skip a generation in energy terms and go straight to solar.

It would be awsome if we could put up a huge solar panel in space which would wirelessly transfer the generated energy to world round the clock. It would be awsome if we could transfer forbes richest 500 to moon/mars and ask them to develop it and once it gets developed, half of the human populations would be sent to settle there.

There could be many more it would be awsome....

Be realistic, India needs cheap power and it isn't going to be possible by solar, atleast not at present. Solar can be used in rural and remote areas but mainline areas requires too too much energy for which solar can't be a solution.

Why isn't solar realistic for India? I thought the country had a good solar resource. Do you know of any studies into the potential solar resource in India?

I sometimes do wonder if some comparatively less developed countries like India and China may actually be better placed than much of the more developed west, to embrace renewable energy, such as solar, because much of their comminutes technology bases are still comparatively under developed. Thus solar could actually enhance such communities that may otherwise have less reliable power resources of more limited availability.

Sure city dwellers may be used to a higher standard of power provision along with other services, but perhaps the more rural and regional communities particularly those of less developed nations, may actually be able to leapfrog some of the limitations of perhaps more restricted services to their communities of fossil fuel based power supply technologies, by application of renewable energy technology like solar, without observing any significant degradation of service and in fact ,may even see an improvement in quality and reliability of service provision from renewable energy technology, such as solar energy etc... compared to perhaps the more limited access they may have had to more conventional fossil fuel or nuclear based energy supplies.

Essentially Solar energy can help with more geographically dispersed communities, many of which may not be accustomed to reliable power supplies to the western standard and so the more limited capacity factors with renewable energy like solar PV, less so Solar Thermal with storage, may actually work for such communities and help provide them with a technological spring board to greater QOS provision over time at a more accelerated rate than might otherwise have been achieved, if they had simply waited until more conventional power services were affordable for their more dispersed communities. They way things are heading with global demand for fossil fuels and nuclear energy, such more conventional technologies may never be affordable for these types of communities due to the time cost curve for such energy.
