Solar Energy Forum I have no doubt that we will be successful in harnessing the sun's energy.... If sunbeams were weapons of war, we would have had solar energy centuries ago. ~Sir George Porter

Default Avalanche Effect in Solar Cells

Researchers demonstrate 'avalanche effect' in solar cells

Quote:
Researchers at TU Delft (Netherlands) and the FOM Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter have found irrefutable proof that the so-called avalanche effect by electrons occurs in specific, very small semiconducting crystals. This physical effect could pave the way for cheap, high-output solar cells. The findings are to be published in scientific journal Nano Letters this week.

Default 2x - 3x gain in output

Conventional solar cells produce one electron (current) per photon that strikes the cell. The nanoscale solar cells can free 2 or 3 electrons per photon.

Lets hope they can find a cost effective way to harness that magnified energy and turn it into more power. Possibly via a Stirling Engine, or other heat engine technology etc...
