Solar Energy Forum I have no doubt that we will be successful in harnessing the sun's energy.... If sunbeams were weapons of war, we would have had solar energy centuries ago. ~Sir George Porter

Thumbs up Residential Solar Embraces Leasing, Power Purchase Agreements

Residential Solar Embraces Leasing, Power Purchase Agreements

California, United States [RenewableEnergyWorld.com]

The use of power purchase agreements (PPAs) and similar leasing instruments to finance residential solar power installations is poised for a boom this year which could prove to be as healthy as the commercial solar PPA market was in 2007, several solar integrators in California suggest.

"There is going to be a boom -- massive adoption -- in the residential market, which we can already see this year. If people can go green and save money why would they not do it?"

-- David Arfin, Vice President. Customer Financing, Solar City

"There were approximately 10,000 homeowners with solar power last year in California, and most say that there will be a 30-to-40 percent growth rate in the state this year," says Nat Kreamer, CEO of Sun Run, a Silicon Valley start-up that offers power purchase agreements to finance most of the cost of installing a system.

It could be great to see power purchase agreements (PPAs) applied to Solar Thermal CSP energy also.

That looks promising .

One of the major problems in Yorkshire (if not the whole country) has been getting a reasonable price for electricity that was produced through microgeneration. It looks like the situation here might be inproving with schemes such as this one by Good Energy Good Energy - Generate Your Own Electricity - the 100% renewable electricity supplier - committed to supporting independent renewable generators . It includes a scheme guaranteeing home owners 9p/kWh generated, but all of hte installation etc has to be covered by the home owner. The only Power Purchase Agreements they seem to offer are with commercial electricity generators Good Energy - Commercial Generation - the 100% renewable electricity supplier - committed to supporting independent renewable generators .

Maybe if the California model works it can be used to highlight the potential of Power Purchase Agreements in the UK.

Indeed. I think we have a scheme like this in Australia also as well as other schemes that involve bulk purchasing of solar equipment for community groups etc... All good, All positive, All making a difference and helping make solar PV more accessible to the consumer. All in good time.

If you come across any links to info on those it would be interesting to find out more.

Sure, I have heard that South Australia and the ACT ( Australian Capital Territory ) offer very favorable PPAs. Victoria less so as its based on the net output model, where as the others I think are based on a direct measured output model. It's really interesting to see as Solar PV is becoming cheaper than coal and other fossil fuelled based electricity, the developments in the business models for future domestic energy supplementation.

Here's a few links for now;

It could be great to see a really big company like BP etc... offering this type of thing, but there are plenty of other operators going for it.
