Based on the resurgence of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) technologies in the marketplace and its potential with thermal storage to provide large amounts of clean dispatchable power to the grid, the Solar Program is pursuing a more balanced technology portfolio between PV and CSP.
Action taken, but not completed. When the President announced the Solar America Initiative in 2007 no additional funds were allocated to CSP to allow it to become a meaningful part of the initiative. However, with the FY 2008 Omnibus budget, CSP has been allocated the additional funding to allow DOE to make CSP a part of SAI and to include goals for CSP, along with PV, to make them both cost competitive in residential and intermediate power markets, respectively by 2015.
