Solar Energy Forum I have no doubt that we will be successful in harnessing the sun's energy.... If sunbeams were weapons of war, we would have had solar energy centuries ago. ~Sir George Porter

Default Do homemade solar cookers work?

Hi

I have seen ideas about solar cookers that are made from old pizza boxes and some silver foil. The sun is directed into the centre where you place a pan of chicken, or anything elso you need to slowly cook. I thought this idea is probably used in emergencies or developing countries. Has the idea been tried and is it a successful way of cooking? ( We couldn't do it in Ireland because the sun iant stron enough most of the year!

Has anyone tried a solar cooker and does it work?

cheers

I have a solar cooker called a Solar Oven. It is basically a insulated box, painted black inside and aluminum reflecors. You can cook anything in it that you can cook in a regular oven. Never tried a cake. Works best as a slow cooker. Temps from 200F to 400F. It does need to be placed in direct sun. Google "solar ovens"
