Totally true. You rarely see families with 6-7 kids in the city as often as you see them in rural areas.

I live in a city. It's cramped, the busses smell like stale weed, and cops are corrupt.
People are rude, and often angry as hell for no reason.
I love it so much and would never trade it for anything.

The Underground has not been working properly every time I visit. I don't know how people rely on it.

I love New York City and recently went to visit for a few days. I hadn't been there in years having been sidetracked with getting married, having kids, getting divorced, typical American dream stuff. Anyway, when I went back this last time, it was really great. I walked everywhere, bought food that was grown locally and organically, met AMAZING people, and met up with vodka every night (another sordid story for a different forum).
To get to the point, my kids are a bit older now, the twins will be six in May, my youngest son five in August, and while I was in NYC walking and shopping, I thought how much fun my kids would have. The other thought I had, was that it would be sheer hell to schlep babies around (and if you don't know much about children, they are babies until about four). And driving in the city isn't even an option. Because of the lifestyle most people lead, work all day and play extremely hard all night, I did not get the impression too many people (and they were 20 and 30 something professionals) really wanted to give it up.
So it would make sense to me that more people in large cities would choose not to have children until maybe later in life, or not at all.

On the other hand there are more people in cities to have sex with, but I totally agree with you. I guess people don't even think about sex in the cities as much as they do in more rural places.

My previous comment came from my heart. Life in cities really is more boring than in the countryside. Or so it feels after living 20/23 of my life in the-middle-of-nowhere.

Contrary to the popular opinion apparently expressed on this thread, it is not necessary to concieve children every time you have sex.
Some of the possible reasons contributing to smaller families in big cities are likely to be:
1) cost of housing being higher, particularly cost of larger houses tending to restrict family size choice
2) higher standard of living of those in cities compared to rural areas
3) greater opportunities for young people leading to a delay in marriage/serious cohabitation and having children
4) more work opportunities resulting in women choosing to have smaller families and spend more of their time in the workforce.
I am sure there are others.
