Default The congestion/co2 charge

Seems that the old London congestion charge has been rebranded and is now being called the co2 charge, with fees levied based on the polluting capacity of your vehicle.

I can't help but think many will regard this as simple profiteering whilst the green bandwagon trundles through (presumably with zero emissions)

I am all for it. 4x4s are simply not needed in a city and I am sick of my road being clogged up with them each taking a space and a half pushing other cars off the street and the general arrogance of the drivers, who look so very stupid in them but for some reason think they actually look cool.

For once I agree with what Ken has said-
Mr Livingstone said: "Nobody needs to damage the environment by driving a gas-guzzling Chelsea tractor in central London. The CO2 emissions from the most high-powered 4x4s and sports cars can be up to four times as great as the least polluting cars."

It's a bit bad that they chop and change the reasoning behind it like that because I don't think congestion is any cured now so it's easy to see why people are cynical about it, but not being a fan of 4x4's I don't really mind. Having been in London quite a bit I can't imagine why anyone would want to drive in London anyway.

There is no place in a big city for 4x4's especially if they do not have a tow-hitch,which shows that the owner has no intention of using the vehicle for its purpose in life...work.What in the name of all thats good and holy is a Range Rover sport for?Only exception is for a real Landy full of organic veggies and free-range stuff.
On the other hand. What in gods name is the purpose of these tiny pseudo-cars ,suzuki and such like noddy-mobiles? Why are they allowed out of the playground and onto the highway? I was stuck behind two of them today and they were doing 63 klics in the 100 zone, I think that was their top speed.I could not overtake for ages as they appeared to be mating.
So can us hilly-billy's put a tax on these plonkers form the city? Congestion takes many forms.

I read today that the Lib Dems mayoral candidate is proposing to charge all non-Londoners £10 to go into any part of the capital. With the price of rail travel it won't be long before people won't be able to travel at all.

The way things are going, someone will probably dig a tunnel to "undercut" all the charges that seem to be coming for London. Question is though, will people want to get in or out? Its a god forsaken s***hole, but it can be nice to visit sometimes.

Tunnel commitee anyone?

"OK chaps, we'll dig 3 tunnels, Tom, Dick, and Harry....."
"What shall we do with all the mud?"
"Well Forfismum's pantilooms will be more than big enough"

Guess you can't please all the people all the time.

Quote:
Editor of Clean Green Cars, the green motoring guide, Richard Bremner agrees, adding that the number of low emission cars on the roads is increasing rapidly, which could lead to greater congestion in the capital.

He adds: "While the principle of encouraging people to use low CO2 cars is a good one, these rules changes are ill-conceived. The 120g/km threshold is too easy for many manufacturers to achieve. We need a tougher target that speeds up the arrival of ultra-low emission models."

And again from Porsche.

Quote:
Porsche has slammed plans to increase the congestion charge for high polluting vehicles for the second time in a week. The German car marque claims the amount of emissions saved in a year as a result of the charge will be equal to the emissions produced at Heathrow Airport in less than four hours.
