Default What was the last movie you saw..

..and what did you think of it?

I watched Million Dollar Baby last night and thought it was pretty good. I'm not a fan of boxing movies so didn't have high expectations for this one but Hilary Swank was superb (as usual).

The last four (over the weekend).

Waking Ned (199(or "Waking Ned Devine" in some part of the world). A gentle comedy in which very little happens - by the time I was thinking that they'd set the situation up, and now the fun would begin, I realised that that was it - end of film.
Oh.
Ho Hum.

Howl's Moving Castle (2004 ?) (Best animated feature film nominee yesterday) Even though I wasn't particularly overwhelmed by Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" from a couple of years ago, I really did like this. The mostly hand-done animation with very little CG stuff matched the quasi-Edwardian setting well. Good characterisation added to an entertaining plot and produced a very enjoyable result.

Good Night, and Good Luck (2005) (another nominee from yesterday) Subtle, polished, well executed... all of these and more, I can see - but I just wasn't in the mood or something. It didn't engage me really.

State and Main (2000) I completely missed this one when it first came out, but it's a gem. An ensemble cast keep a huge number of running gags/plotlines interweaving throughout with some fantastic throwaway lines. It's almost a live action Muppet Show in many ways (complete with Waldorf and Statler). You'd have to watch this a couple of times to get the best from it and follow all the gags. Great stuff.

Default Sahara

The last one I saw was almost a year ago, Sahara, the environmental thriller and buddy movie. Outstanding, Mathew McConaughey, action, romance, adventure. Nothing I've seen reviews of since has "tripped my trigger".

But then we have T.V. - - I mean going to the movies is like doing something in order to see a movie.

The last movie I watched on T.V. was "Matrix" - it was just good as ever before: I've watched it five times for a reason. -

Ravenous (1999) - Great! A rather quirky cannibal horror, with a few hints of comedy that in no way detract from the genuinely tense moments. Fine performance(s) from Robert Carlyle, and a really extraordinary soundtrack, take this a long way above the norm. I wasn't entirely convinced by the last 20 minutes however - particularly something that springs up right at the end, which I found seriously improbable.

It's set in 1847 in Sierra Nevada - with hints at the Donner Party's disasterous journey, the case of Alferd Packer and the tales of the Wendigo.

A friend of mine apparently had relatives in the Donner Party.

Watched City of God (Cidade de Deus) tonight and was very impressed. Set in a Brazilian slum it charts the story of gangland violence and how youngsters survive and thrive by murder, robbery and narcotics. The style of the movie is similar to that of Goodfellas with the narrator a relative gang outsider who has dreams of leaving the slum for a career in photography.

Not for the squeamish but the acting is superb and provides a fascinating insight into that way of life. That each of the principal actors were unknown (and may not have even been actors) only adds to the authenticity of the film.

Well worth watching.
