Eco-horror films shocking us into action - CNN.com

Quote:
You can forget the torture porn of "Saw" and "Hostel" - in fact these new films are marked by a distinct lack of blood and guts. But there is no doubting their ability to chill audiences to the core: Welcome to the world of eco-horror.

Unlike most horror films these movies aren't fiction, they are serious documentaries tackling the big issues of our time. But the message is still: Be afraid.

I'm all for presenting people with the scary facts of the situation we're in, but we need to provide people with things they can do to help at the same time. Just scaring people will lead them to bury their head in the sand hoping it all goes away.

Well, we can all sit ourselves down and howl at the government to please think twice about the fossil-fuels addiction of ours. We need clean energy from renewable sources. We need to consume less oil, gas, and coal. But there is not much ordinary citizens can do about this realization: - it takes government effort. And a lot of it, too. As for now, all that we get is a lot of postponement; and numbers concerned with the reduction of emissions to take place before 2020 and 2050. It's not enough. - We need to start bulding solar power plants. We need to construct wind farms. We need to do some actual emissions cuts, and it would be a good thing if this could be done starting from next year, or right now, and not just sit around and wait for a low-carbon future to finally arrive.

i think its a great thing that holiday bigwigs are looking for ways to create awareness to the problems affecting out planet. Sure, movies like Day After Tomorrow is all about money, but documentaries like Inconvenient Truth must surely have struck a cord with the majority of people who have watched it.
