It's a new year, and rather than pull out, I dove back in deeper than ever. It's not just about science anymore, because all the science in the world is useless without a social, political, economic, and historical context. I don't know if I'll be getting any hate mail for this, or if will somehow come back to haunt me in my professional life. Somehow, it feels right.

    Greetings to all!

I have enjoyed posting on this website, but I have become concerned that it is not in my best interest to continue to do so. I fear that I will eventually be baited into saying something that could later be used to embarrass me, as I do not keep my identity secret.

If anyone wishes to communicate with me, I invite you to write me at: robertnorthup@hotmail.com

If anyone is curious about the “avitar” picture shown by my name, it is “The Cyclical Continuum of Elemental Properties”. This spiral version of the Periodic Table is a teaching tool I developed for introductory chemistry. It is available from VWR, Sargent Welch, or Science Kit.

    Best of luck to all!

A 10 Point Plan to Mitigate Some of the Ravages of Global Warming

Anonymous - August 10, 2008

6. Couple Hydrogen Fuel Combustion to Zero Emission Energy Sources

Hydrogen gas can be used as fuel for combustion, producing only water vapor emissions. However, another energy source is required somewhere, in order to generate hydrogen. Oxidation of reduced (i.e., zero-valent) forms of metals, such as metallic aluminum, can provide that energy. After the...

A 10 Point Plan to Mitigate Some of the Ravages of Global Warming

1. Transform Deserts into Saltwater Wetlands to Slow Rising Sea Level

No human action can reduce greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere soon enough to prevent the large-scale melting of glaciers and, consequently, a destructive rise in sea level. However, by taking seawater out of the ocean and putting it on desert land, we could slow the rising of...
