i have no idea what you are talking about, but i just read oryx and crake for my master thesis on climate change in literature, and i found it very disturbing, too. it's a good book and it really shows how the world might end up eventually if nothing changes anytime soon...
i wanted to see how things are going with you? how is the phd planning going? i hope better than my stuff - i find this thing really hard to do...

I would suggest reading Oryx and Crake. I find that book to more disturbing.

Thank you! I thought it was a great book as well. That quote had me cracking up when I read it. Also, thanks for the points! They were the first I had received

Narnia has, I believe, 7 books. The second one, "The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe" is the one I'm thinking of. Narnia is pretty much the same tune as The Hobbit, so I think you'll enjoy it; The Silmarillion, on the other hand, is a bit on the silly side, Tolkin tried to make a sort of "Old Testament" to The Lord of the Ring's "New Testament". I'm not sure it has anything that would suit what you're looking for, though.
I'm still e-mailing people about this. Maybe someone will come up with something else?

Narnia would be fun, I have always wanted to read that (How many books are there in the series, do you know by any chance and in which the scene is?)!

With the science fiction literature I just have the very small and insignificant issue that I am very much girl and not a big fan of the hard science fiction stuff, I am more in favor of twilight, Harry Potter, or anything going in that direction... Tolkien is something I can try though - Lord of the Rings completely failed me (astonishing, I know) but I loved the Hobbit so I think it's worth a try.

    Thanks, you are great!

I read Frankenstein so many years ago, I didn't remember. It happens in Tolkien's Silmarillion as well, doesn't it? When the forces of darkness take over, the weather gets colder. Also, how about Narnia? The Evil witch created a winter that lasted for 100 years.

hothouse is very science fiction too... and I also heard that Pullman's 'dark materials' have some element of global warming in them, something about an ice bear looking for a new home or the like (I haven't gotten round to reading them yet, I am in the middle of Frankenstein right now cause I heard that it bears images of the little ice age - 1300-1850 - and it's true, whenever Frankenstein feels better, the weather is suddenly lighter and warmer too).

It's weird, I have never read that much very different stuff in so short a time, haha...

I haven't really found that many books that deal with climate change in that manner though so far, the other example i can think of is steinbeck's grapes of wrath with its descriptions of the dust bowl in the US. but i have read some books dealing with climate change as either thriller (michael crichton's state of fear) or as science fiction (aldiss' hothouse for instance). i got so lucky that i found this forum here, people have been really helping me out. if you have any ideas concerning either lit or a possible thesis, i'd be very grateful - keep in touch and let me know how your work is progressing!

    Hi Carlos,

No, not yet. I am still reading lots and lots of books both literary and scientific to get an idea of what is there and am also trying to understand the inner secret workings of ecocriticism and how to find it in literature.

I am an English lit major so my topic is going to be in some way dealing with climate change and the depiction in literature. thing is, my prof wants me to deal with naturalistic background descriptions that show the impact of the rising temperatures (harry potter 5 where vernon can't water his lawn since the government regulated the use of water due to the hot and dry summer in england - apparently that can be traced back to the summer of 1995 according to my prof, i have no idea if it's true or no.)
