Diversity is better, we really haven't a clue of the long term impacts of our decisions. But, on the other side, how many vegetables do you eat that have been genetically selected based on mutation? For example, do you like sweet corn? It is based on a genetic mutation, which of course also means it is a very narrow genetic base.

So I guess you don't eat rice or beans? These have been genetically selected over thousands of years. They would never make it in the wild.
Unless you are a pure carnivore, you are eating things most likely that mankind has selected over thousands of years - and usually the differences are due to mutation.

Leave it alone and the forest " figures it out"

I don't know enough about other countries' ecosystems so maybe that's true in reinforests but woodland here in the UK has a very strong renationahip with human activity, due to us being a small island in which there is not a single bit of land that has not been touched by humans. in this country, deer especially do not have any major preditors (other than humans) and they can do considerable damage to growing trees. it is pretty much universally recognised amongst conservationists that deer populations must not be allowed to exceed certain sizes if the forest is to regenerate naturally. There are strict guidelines on population sizes and controls but it does benefit the woodland as well and providing some food and resources for humans. That is why I asked my question.

Don't forget about the selective breeding of cattle and sheep, amongst other things.

Yep, the harsh reality is that we could not support a return to pre-modified foods. We as a race have been genetically modifying our food for thousands of years. We can eat the other stuff, but lets be honest, it wouldn't support many of us.
And I don't about the rest of you, I am not ready to volunteer to leave at this point...
But, selection is a long, slow process, with many, many branches that a preserved in the genetic material. Cloning and Genetic Engineering is something entirely different, and honestly, hard to predict.

I was trying to be funny, sigh. Overpopulation has a solution, it is reduction of the population - but not a lot of people are volunteering to reduce the population by dying, to put it bluntly.

Ahhh, I thought it had been related to do you with discussion with 12canrescuer . Also, people don't tend to be too happy about people committing suicide.
