Methane from organic waste?

I was thinking if Methane can be created from Organic Waste (left over food stuff, rotten food stuff, leaves etc)?

Is it possible?

How? I was looking for a household kind of simplistic procedure.

Please help.

Here's a video on a biodigestor, they mainly use manure, but the also use food waste as well. So the process would be similar for what you wanted to know
