But it'll take a while for the prices to be passed on to the consumer. Forgive me and hello, this is my second post. If the fuel's bought in bulk, why does it shoot up and only drip down in cost? I've never understood that - is it something to do with the economics, or just because people can?

Hi I think the price drops are a sign of weakening demand as much as anything. The global economy is in a mess so people simply can't afford the fuel any more.

Sharp decline in alcohol consumption this year - The Irish Times - Tue, Sep 16, 2008

- “We’re being hit by the double whammy of high costs and a weakening economy. This is worrying news for jobs in the domestic alcohol manufacturers in particular and for the traditional high-employment retail sector.”

Crude oil continues decline - International Herald Tribune

Quote:
The price of oil has lost more than 37 percent since it peaked in early July at $145.29 a barrel because of slowing economic growth and falling consumption in Western economies. The drop accelerated on Monday after Wall Street suffered its worst day since 2001, and Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy protection.

As the economic picture darkens, the outlook for oil consumption is worsening. The OPEC cartel, which accounts for about 40 percent of the world's oil, on Tuesday lowered its forecast for oil demand this year because of slowing economic growth.

"The weakening economic situation has been reflected in a slowdown in world oil demand growth," the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries said in its monthly market report.
- So, it is not that we are actually consuming any less; it is only that the demand growth is slowing down.

Saw some for 104pence per litre today. Should be back under £1 again before too long I should think.

I heard on the news today that some outlets have dropped prices to sub £1/litre.
I have a Tesco 5p/l off cupon, so even if they are still at £1.04.......

Funny that the media don't report the price falling with half as much relish as they reported the price rising.

A price war between the UK's top four supermarkets is under way after Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Morrisons announced cheaper petrol.

Asda and Sainsbury's said they would slash their petrol prices to as low as 94.9p a litre.

BBC NEWS | Business | Supermarkets slash petrol prices

Wow. Almost back to how it used to be.
