Oil prices rebounded on fresh hopes that the global economy could remain robust after unprecedented action taken by a number of key central banks.

The plan to make available billions of dollars worth of loans to cash-strapped banks pushed a barrel of New York light crude up $4.37 to $94.39 a barrel.

Oil has traded at $100 a barrel for the first time.

Violence in Nigeria, Algeria and Pakistan, the weak US dollar and the threat of cold weather have all raised prices after the new year break.

Light sweet crude rose $4.02 to $100 a barrel in New York, prompting a drop in shares and a surge in gold prices.

Wow, the magical $100 topped

Woh. I wonder where on earth prices are going to go this year. Last year was bad for money markets and inflation, etc. I think that this year is either going to be a lot, lot worse or will be tipped over the edge.

It will get interesting for sure, what with food and fuel going up in price, and credit squeezing people financially.

I think it's the West Texas Crude that hit 100$ earlier as Brent is trading around 97.5 $. Either way petrol or fuel prices won't increase greatly just because they've gone up a smidge to 100 $
