India is planning to push Coal to Liquid Fuels (CTL) in a big way. But here are few technical as well as socio-environmental issues arising out of it. Some analysis.
Quote:
India is flying high on Coal to Liquid fuels (CTL). As per the recent reports Oil India Limited, Tata-Sasol and Reliance are planning to foray into CTL in a big way. This technology is being used for several years but due to the high crude prices it has become a high choice.
Tata has joined with Sasol to use it patented Fischer-Tropsch process to convert coal to various products like Diesel, Naptha, Jet fuel, LPG and other oils. On the other hand Reliance is planning to use US technology to produce about 80,000 BPD of synthetic oils. Reliance already owns Mahanadi Coal and has applied for coal blocks in Talcher Coalfields, Orrissa.
