But then you are prolly like me,using just what we need and no more.I was looking at some of the new shiny stuff in one of the big chain stores this week [not buying ,jus' lookin'] and my word they use some juice.2X500 Gb hard drives 3Gb ram 500+ Mb graphics and some with 2 graphics cards, internal lights for some reason, heat pipe technology for cooling.Sad part is that most of the time these will only be used to send emails or chat on bebo or whatever.
Hanging around TES is vital research work and is excluded from any criticism.

They say that pages with light backgrounds are easier to read. If they are easier to read, people can probably read them more quickly, and get the information they want in a shorter timeframe. So maybe it's actually better to have a white background for that reason?
It depends on your vision, eg many people with visual impairments find yellow text on a black background easiest to read on screen. It's an interesting idea though, and it would apply to the majority.

I wonder what the web would look like if it was structured purely for speed and readability - maybe a load of plain text indexed bulleted lists of links leading to more plain text pages, like it was in the early days?

this has to be one of the ugliest things on the web next to red and yellow colour schemes. There are many many bits of software to help those of us with poor eyesight while still maintaining some semblence of good taste I will be testing a new desktop soon called Adriane which is an audio desktop for those with poor sight, I just have to set up a PC from my collection of vintage models to see,or at least hear, what it does.[Adriane is available as free Linux software and is part of Knoppix 5.3.1]

Wonder no more annabelt,if you are using Firefox [and if not ,why not ] then you go to tool bar-view-pagestyle-no style and there you are back to basics There is also an add-on for Firefox called Scroogle Scraper which cuts out all the crap from Google and stops them from profiling you.Don't know if you have a similar thingie for windoze.

I know that you will all be pleased to hear that on my last trip to the landfill I became the proud owner of 2 LCD's [15"] So now I can have 3 monitors running at the same time.Great fun.I have 4 PC's linked via KVM to one monitor and now I can use 2 of the other PC's from my collection with the new monitors. One is a bit dicky ,I guess its a failed solder joint to be fixed but soon it may be linked to a web cam.......in a nest box perhaps?
