Google has started gr8 thing with this. Everyone will follow this after few year. It will be in news and Google will get appreciation for this. I guess.
Its very small thing but if all people use these kind of things then it can save much more energy.

I guess the problem as stated is that LCDs are backlit and energy usage is not significantly effected by color changes. Perhaps they can find other ways to promote the concept of more efficient page design. Actually Googles pages are pretty simple in appearance anyway. Perhaps some scripts to also set your monitor power management, adjust and optimise your monitors contrast and brightness settings etc... I set my screen power off, for 5 minutes. I have read in a few places that an LCD screen is said to use less power when using a white background. i.e. It apparently takes power to twist the liquid crystals to make black, power that is not applied to make white. The reverse applies to CRTs it seems. A bit of a long shot I admit. It might seem a bit gimmicky I admit, but it may help get us thinking more about saving energy. I will leave it to the experts though.

I do wish that people would stop pissfarting about with time wasting ideas not don't really save anything in the end.Your PC is the power user and most PC's these times are way too powerful for home, school or office use unless you are gaming or doing a lot of graphical work .One solution is the use of a free software package called 2-free from a Canadian company called Userful.I will not give any more details on them as they also do commercial stuff. This software allows you to use 2 keyboards and monitors from one PC thus making big savings. The commercial version can power 10 monitors thus saving 80% power, more effective than nitpicking with monitor settings. You may as well sit picking your nose as mess with your monitor settings because sure as hell a site will turn up that you cant read 'cause you are saving the planet.Life is too short for that sort of grape-peeling activity.
PS I have had to post this twice as it mysteriously disappeared earlier on.Must remember to save me posts while the site is unstable.

And just so you folks get the hang of things, your graphics card is using ............prolly 160-180 watts so if you want to make any meaningful savings why not switch it off ,cause you sure as hell can't play planetsavers with it

The thread and article is predominantly about raising public awareness in the context of web page design and energy usage in relation to CRTs.

Assuming that users run Google in full screen mode, the shift to a black background [on a CRT monitor! mjo] will save a total of 15 (74-59) watts.

The forum discussion then extends to LCDs to help provide further context. I think most people well appreciate that energy savings from this idea, are not likely to be hugely significant when compared to the entire power load of a PC. We also well appreciate that CRTs are being superseded by LCDs, that I understand use less energy anyway size for size.
If people want to do other things to help optimise their PC configuration so it consumes as little energy as possible , that's great, though I suspect most people don't even have two screens, so it's somewhat irrelevant to this topic, as is the post about the graphics card. If people want to save more energy they could simply minimise use of their PC or even get rid of it all together, but again that's not the point.
The big savings are more likely to come from technology advancements, but it's good to know we can do little things along the way that make a small difference and also help to remind us to remain conscious about how we use energy.
PS
forfismother, forfi etc... the reason your previous post was deleted as indicated, was because your use of language was unnecessarily disrespectful toward others that have contributed to this thread. You can easily get your point across, without deliberately insulting others in the process.

May I just say before leaving this thread, and at the risk of incurring further wrath from my Antipodean friend, that the future is indeed looking black for the USA? A Black President and now a Black Google..where wil it end I ask you.

Probably not in my case - my PC power supply is rated at just 60W.
