I had the option of getting my old car back -30 mpg- a 2006 suzuki areo.
But i though I should contribute and there is a big problem in america with urbanization.( not enough and not enough public transit)

So i moved to where I could ride my bike and walk where I needed too

We own a Hyundai Getz which manages around 6.5L/100km on average per tank (36MPG). It's not too bad, we are starting to get a good selection of efficient diesel passenger cars here now although there is little available in the second hand market yet.

That's obviously US gallons in your mpg figure. For UK gallons it would be about 43 mpg. Not too bad, but...
For the trip is did today, my previous car, a C180K (supercharged) Mercedes with an auto box, 43-45 mpg would have been par for the course.
Earlier this year I got a 2.2l Diesel six-speed manual. For the trip today, it returned 63 mpg (UK gallons) which is about 52 mpg (US) or 4.5l/100km.

It's the first Diesel I have had and I was a bit dubious at first, but swayed by the potential savings in fuel cost. It has delivered.

Yeah I did give a US MPG figure, I didn't realise the other figures people were giving in previous posts were UK MPG. I wondered why it seemed a little low. That's a nice fuel consumption figure from your diesel. I would love to get the new Audi A3 that has just launched here, they are quoting figures of 3.3L/100km for highway driving. We can't even get those sorts of figures out of our SV650 bikes!.

2000 Impala LS, 3.8L V6 engine, 34mpg (US) highway mileage, which is higher than EPA estimates, but I drive conservatively.....

Do you know what your overall fuel consumption is?
The last time I was in USA, (2006) I had an Impala for a couple of weeks. From what I recall, consumption was around 25mpg.

Highly commendable.
But public transport isn't always an option.
For me to get from home to work would involve at least four changes with about a half hour walk up or down a steep hill in the middle of that. The fare for the round trip, off peak, would be more than £30. Mrs B works in the same office as I, so it would cost us about £60 - a day. And journey time would be around two hours each way.
It isn't really an option when we can do the same trip by car in less than an hour each way with a fuel cost of £4 for the round trip.

Well, in my city, using the public transportation is much more economic for students. I believe it worth to use public transportation rather than car, considering the increasing fuel price (this month might be an exception, but generally). A car also requires a lot of money for insurance and reparations.

I guess using a car would only be useful for long distance from your town. But inside the town, in my situation, it is more worthy to use the public transportation.
