If your house has drafty windows, even slightly, you might as well throw money out of them. Do the candle check. Run a lit candle around your windows edges, any flicker and you need to plug that gap quick.

To reduce the need for ambient lightning of large spaces. I recommend to install task lightning, such as under-counter kitchen lights or bathroom mirror lights.

* Unplug equipment e.g. mobile phones, shavers and electric toothbrushes—once they are fully charged, otherwise they will keep drawing electricity.

* When washing up or running a bath turn the thermostat on your hot water tank down to 60c. This is a comfortable temperature for most people.

* An ordinary shower uses just two fifths of the water for a bath. In contrast, power showers use as much water as a bath and sometimes more.

Saw a lady on the tv yesterday who boiled her kettle, and then put the boiled water into a thermas flask so she could use it throughout the day without having to re-boil the kettle. Quite innovative.

I'm not profligate in my use of energy but one of the few things I would not willingly sacrifice is our thermostatically controlled power shower. One lever, one setting, and you have comfortably hot water. To save energy and water, don't linger longer than required.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that people with dishwashers spend more time filling them and emptying them than people without dishwashers spend washing up - so they're a false economy from every perspective.

Actually, the circumstance that prompted me to write post #45 was that I had spent the best part of a week in a hotel on business. It was a very nice place with sauna, gym, pool, free wifi, etc. and set in pretty grounds.

The rooms were tastefully furnished and well-equipped.
But the shower was a bit disappointing. It was one of these over the bath affairs and impossible to prevent a lot water from spraying out onto the floor.
I was glad to get home to a warm woman, a cold beer, and a hot shower in a proper shower cubicle.

Domestic air conditioners are not all that common in UK.
But I agree with your point about ceiling fans. I have fitted a few in our house distribute the air.
