But if folks don't bring their virus and trojan ridden puters to the landfill ,how can I upgrade my stuff ?

I have just set up a box exclusively for media stuff using Debian Studio64,tried it some time back but now i have it on a P4 box with 512 of ram [dear God send me some more this week] its a fantastic home recording studio for free and I can plug all my instruments into it and using Audacity make my own albums. It also does photies and movies. Not bad for a trip to the landfill and better than anguishing over a plastic bag or two

But here is my tip for saving paper and ink and cd's for that matter.Copy as much as you can to a USB thingie and bring it to where you need to.When your kids want to burn a cd for their pals, loan them the thingie and let them copy the music to the friends PC instead .You can put a very sophisticated presentation together on a 4 gig pen and they come in 8 gigs [and better]now so there is a great opportunity to cut your use of paper and ink.
