In January, the Brazilian government announced that the rate of deforestation in the Amazon jungle had soared in the last half of 2007, just months after officials had celebrated three years of steep falls.

The Brazilian minister for the environment, Marina Silva, has resigned . The president kept on undermining her attempts to defend the Amazon by pandering to business concerns.

Sad isn't it, especially when Lula has been spouting so often about the rainforests lately.

Long term the Amazon is doomed anyway.The greening of the Sahel will reduce the amount of dust blowing from the Bodel Depression and this will starve the Amazon.Maybe.
