Its interesting that this publication should coincide with the massive snowfalls of recent weeks " if history is any precedent, could trigger a planetary cold spell that could bring massive snowfall and severe weather to the Northern Hemisphere."
I recall a paper from some 10-12 years ago which gave a possibility of a return to ice age conditions in as little as ten years,I just can't find it right now.I do recall that it was mentioned that previous changes were always abrupt.
And another coincidence, this was published on feb 4th
CU study finds volcanoes likely cause of 'Little Ice Ages' : Local News : The Rocky Mountain News
So all you need is a little bit of volcanic activity while the sun is taking a nap and its snowshoes all round.....

Yes, and let's not forget about the THC (Thermohaline Circulation) and more specifically, the Gulf Stream. We may get a triple wammy.

Too true,Paradox, that circulation has put the brakes on rapidly in the past and has shown signs of being erratic since the early '70s.
There are currently 14 Volcanos showing significant activity

I heard a couple of interesting things recently. One was more snow on the ground now than since 1966. The other was reasoning for arctic sea ice dissapperance. Evidently that one was winds blowing more established ice out to warmer areas while leaving new thin ice to do the annual melt bit.
sounds like BRRRRRRR ^ 2 if cycle 24 doesn't get off its duff and start sunspotting away pretty soon with an impressive effort.

Global Cooling comes back in a big way
Cbacba,
There are many reasons I have postulated which led me to the belief that cooling was imminent. The demise of our Solar activity (which is not going to abate anytime soon) was one component to my assessment. I am still wondering if the '5200 Year Event' is what we are bearing witness to. The Sun is the forcing at the moment but Earth systems will kick in to harden the blow soon enough.
The irony is that this cycle was supposed to be a very active one. Global Warming is going to die the fastest death of an establishment movement in the history of mankind.
I fear for our friends in cold places.

It may still be a rather active one, but as it delays, that likely diminishes and the probability it's a dud increases. Being mediocre isn't the same as essentially being DOA but at the moment, either are still quite possible.
Cults though tend to have a penchant for mass suicide (and somethimes assisted suicide), it's hard to compete with them for speed of demise.

Cbacba,
5200 years ago (which coincides with the Mayan long-count calendar's last beginning) has significance in our history. Before it arrived we have no record of civilization, and after it arrived life as we know it began. Actually, this is not entirely true now, there were a few bands of hardy renegades that endured post Atlantis...today we would probably call them 'gold bugs'.
