THE PLANET: Documentary on human misconduct in general, as related to all things natural and environmental
Doomsday or Ecocidal Tendencies? - -- Who's to say what not to say? Let's ask Mr. Gore. Or Mr. Ehrlich.
Anyway: I hate it (really, really hate it) when people start going mental on me, by means of religious language. "Doomsday's Called Off", ha? I do not need that kind of reassurement. In fact: the title of that series, linked by Paradox above, makes me wonder: for the interests of which sections of society are these people preaching?

Been very busy recently.
Have some new interesting stuff, the sun is out of the picture for this current warming it seems (PNAS 07), CO2 influence has been underestimated in past (Nature 2007), the variation of climate changes is suggestive that all the players can force the climate and not just the sun (science 2007), Jan 07 was the hottest ever, the Arctic Sea ice maxinmum sea ice extent is second lowest ever to 2006 by about a sliver, and 2006 had mimimum sea ice every month apart from September which is held by 2005, and then 2002, also a recent submarine trip has discovered that the arctic is about 40-50% thinning and predictions has been brought forward for the arctic to be ice free in summer by 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!........that will accelerate warming some, then ther eis the Amundsen Ice sheet, Ross Ice sheet, all the glaciers in Peru furthest retreat for 5120 years when there was a climate event in the tropics at least.
Its been a hot April here in the UK 24C in London several times.
Anyway I am still busy but will try to post occasionally, oh yeah it also been found that droughts in USA from 1988-1990 and 1998-2003 actually reduced the MOA CO2 fluctation meaning a carbon sink of 100,000,000 tonnes or 0.05ppm of CO2, was lost in those years, forest fires are burning, OZ is still in drought.
2007 is going to an interesting year, all the tak now is towards adaptation andmitigation, it will be survival policies soon, and how to maintain our countries fortune,,,,,,,war in other words the case against Iran is being built as we sepak.

Hi Simple.
Just a comment about the sun. You are correct in that solar activity has not altered appreciably for 30 years, so has had little influence on climate change over that time. However, it is still at an awesomely high level, and could drop at any stage, which would be a strong cooling influence. Some would-be prophets are claiming that past solar cycles permit a prediction of such a drop in 2030. I will probably still be alive to see it, if it happens.
I notice that the years 1880 to 1910 were a period of cooling, but with a small but clear cut CO2 rise. By comparison, the years 1910 to 1940 had a very similar degree of CO2 rise, but underwent very strong warming.
How is it that a very similar level of CO2 rise over the first 30 year period gave significant global cooling and substantial warming in the next?

There is no doubt that a massive climate shift is well underway. Did you have a chance to read the CNA report I posted? While I obviously remain a skeptic of human induced climate change/global warming (at least as a primary forcing) I am glad to see the focus begin to shift from 'why' to 'what the hell are we going to do about it'. As the report states, there are many reasons to release energy technologies and promote efficiency that transcend the call for C02 mitigation. There will come a day soon that the music will stop and we may find ourselves without a seat.
I feel that we are transitioning into a new chapter in this fight for survival...the alarm bells are being replaced with alarm. Reality is setting in. Whether by heat or cold, our water resources are evaporating and this trend will persist. This Summer and hurricane season will be telling...there is no El Nino this year to provide the upper-level shear to diffuse the tropical systems.
The party is only yet getting started.

If you consider that the melting of our ice 'could' alter ocean circulation (potentially causing another mini-ice-age or worse) and combine this with the predicted decline of solar output we could have a recipe for disaster. We may be looking back on 2000-2010 as the good old days.
