The general public is just supposed to think, period. If more of them did this, we wouldn't have half so many problems.
If they can't get around to that, then seeing what the experts have to say is generally the best plan. Letting the most unbiased professional science types you can find do the thinking for you isn't a bad fall-back position. Bookmark something like realclimate.org, if you have any interest in keeping abreast of the state of climatic affairs.
Since huge percentages of the public don't bother to think, and can't be bothered to see what the experts say, that leaves the activists to try to get the word out. They do so the best they can. If they fail, it falls to the media, who -- because they are paid for by business advertising -- are essentially activists as well.
In a nutshell: If you want to know the reality of the world as best you can, consult professional sources. If you just want to keep an open mind about it, pick an activist voice that appeals to you, and listen. Better than nothing, probably.
