The UK met office uses a Unified Model to predict climate and weather. The model can be configured differently depending upon whether one is doing a weather forecast or a climate forecast. For a short term weather prediction, only the atmospheric portion of the model need be used, other portions of the climate model are held constant when performing a weather forecast.
However, for long term climate modeling these things cannot be held constant, such as ocean temperature, vegetation, sea ice, etc. Also, the resolution used is smaller for a weather forecast.
However, the climate models are also beginning to be used with greater resolution. As computing power increases, the climate models and the weather-forecasting models are expected to converge.
