Here in the UK, we're decades behind in this technology. We have a number of anaerobic plants treating sewage sludge, but not much in the way of taking wastes from external sources.

Without having dedicated crops to provide a steady feedstock, it can be hard to set up a large scale plant using only waste straight away, and the supply network (and the market) needs time develop. While there are ideal materials, and less than ideal materials (depending upon the carbon/nitrogen content among other things), the potential is large. Organic wastes from industry currently going for composting has a potential, but its usually more expensive to send for AD.

Domestic organic wastes has proved to be problematic in the UK as they often find plastics among the waste, so the residues at the end of the process is often unsuitable for sending to land.

Its a technology that needs much more investment though, but we just hope governments will get the hint.
