But, if you use plastic you are increasing the demand for fossil fuel based products, rather than if you just refused to buy anything with fossil fuels in them (fuel, plastic whatever). This demand is the reason that companies extract the oil in the first palce, rather than leaving it burried in the rocks where it cannot release anything very easily.
