The figures are only the recent ones. Elephant killings in srilanka have been since quite some time.

About ten villagers were killed by the wild elephants and caused extensive damage to houses. There isn’t a single house that was not damaged by wild elephants. Several houses were razed to the ground. Wild elephants that enter the human habitats at dusk in search of fodder pull down the houses to eat paddy and destroy the crops in the home gardens."
