People can already do that here. Just that you don't end up being off the grid. You use your electricity and divert any excess to the grid and are paid at the prevailing load price. When you need electricity, you pay for it from the grid. Most people do home solar, rather than wind, because it is virtually impossible to get planning approval to stick a dirty great wind turbine in the backyard and most other sorts of wind systems don't generate enough power. However, there is nothing in principle stopping someone going wind.
The main reason why there is not total independence from the grid is that home renewable systems don't make electricity all the time and home owners can't afford the mass of batteries needed to store the excess for when it is needed.
Why don't more people do it? The capital set up costs are large, even with the Government's rebate.
