Perhaps it may be perceived as tokenism, but even symbolism such as that, can help shape public opinion. The Earth Day is really about making the public aware of the issues, to help shift mainstream opinion. Also as mentioned, does it really save energy ? LCDs perhaps not it seems ? CRTs perhaps ? Do we have a definitive on balance view on this ?
I think ultimately, highlighting the issues is what makes us question the status quo and helps us move toward better solutions.
